FIFA ANNOUNCE 3 WORLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS
FIFA have announced the three finalists for the 2016 FIFA Best Men’s Player award, previously known as the World Player of the Year award, snubbing the likes of Luis Suarez and Neymar.
Cristiano Ronaldo is seen as the favourite to lift the prestigious award after guiding Real Madrid to UEFA Champions League glory and Portugal to their first ever UEFA European Championship title.
Overall, he has netted 51 goals and assisted another 17 strikes since the beginning of 2016, and was also voted the European Player of the Year by UEFA.
Ronaldo has won this award, which was handed out in collaboration with France Football over the past six years, three times (two FIFA Ballons d’Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008), and could close the gap on Lionel Messi.
The Argentine, who won the La Liga and Copa Del Rey titles with FC Barcelona, but lost the Copa America final with his national team, has won the award a record-breaking five times (four FIFA Ballons d’Or in addition to his FIFA World Player of the Year title in 2009).
Messi has netted 55 goals and assisted another 32 strikes in all competitions this year, which means he was involved in 19 more goals than Ronaldo.
Antoine Griezmann, who has made it to the podium for the first time, is the next player attempting to break Messi and Ronaldo’s eight-year Ballon d’Or reign.
The Atletico Madrid striker lost both the Champions League and Euro finals this, but was named Player of the Tournament at the European Championship, and also claimed the Euro Golden Boot award.
The 25-year-old has scored 36 goals for club and country in 2016 so far, and assisted another 15 strikes.
